How to Add a New Hidden Product Category

Adding hidden product categories within websites can serve many different types of useful purposes and the can even offer many different SEO related benefits in some cases. 

The Steps for Adding Hidden Product Categories: Follow the steps outlined below to add a new hidden product category and sub-category, along with a product within the new sub-category. Steps are also included to add a link to the product in an email newsletter blast with an image

Add a new hidden product category:

  1. Hover over the main Product Tab and select: Product Catalog
  2. In the product Catalog Management panel, click the button labeled: add a new category
  3. Select the category that the new category should be placed under, by clicking the category name. To save the new category as a top level category, just make sure that Categories folder is selected. The category should be red once selected.
  4. Enter in the Category Name
  5. Click and check the box beside Hide this category from public navigation to hide the link on the front end of the website.
  6. Scroll to the bottom and click Add Category to save.

Add a new hidden sub-category:

  1. Hover over the main Product Tab and select: Product Catalog
  2. In the product Catalog Management panel, click the button labeled: add a new category
  3. Select the category that the new category should be placed under, by clicking the category name. The category should be red once selected.
  4. Enter in the Category Name
  5. Click and check the box beside Hide this category from public navigation to hide the link on the front end of the website.
  6. Scroll to the bottom and click Add Category to save.

Add a New Product:

  1. Hover over Product and click on Product Catalog.
  2. Click the grey button labeled Add a New Product.
  3. Select the Primary Category for the product to be contained in by clicking on one of the displayed folders. The folder should be red once selected.
  4. Select the Status from the dropdown menu.
  5. Select the Ecommerce Type from the dropdown menu.
    • Available for online purchase – users can purchase this product off the site.
    • Request a quote – users cannot purchase this product on the site but can inquire about its cost.
    • Display Only – users can view the product, but cannot purchase it on the site.
    • Display Only – Discontinued – users will be notified that this product no longer exists, but can view its specs.
    • Display Only – Out of Stock – users will be notified that they cannot place the order for this product now, but the product will be stocked again.
  6. Give the product a Product Name and any other attributes you wish.
  7. Click Add Product.

To Add a Link to the New Product within an Email/Newsletter Blast:

  1. Navigate to the product that you would like to promote in the CMS.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and copy the URL listed beside Public URL on to your clipboard by highlighting the URL and hitting Ctrl C on your keyboard.
  3. Next, hover over Communication and select Broadcast Email.
  4. Select New Email Communication
  5. Select the departments and/or virtual groups you would like to send the email to. Click Next
  6. Fill out the broadcast email form.

To add a link with an image that wraps around the content:

  1. At this stage, start by adding the content of newsletter in the HTML Message field.
  2. Then click beside the content to select the location where the image should be displayed.
  3. Add an image using the image button on the WYSIWYG panel.
  4. After selecting the image under the Image Info Tab, click on the Link Tab.
  5. Paste the URL of the product in the field labeled: URL
  6. Click OK to save.

To wrap the text around the image:

  1. Select and highlight the image.
  2. Click the Align Left or Align Right button on the WYSIWYG panel.

To add a text link to the email:

  1. Highlight the text that you would like to linked to the product.
  2. Click the Link button on the WYSIWYG panel.
  3. Paste the URL of the product within the field labeled: URL
  4. Click OK to save.
  5. Next click the button labeled Finish at the bottom.
  6. Don’t forget to send the email to yourself as a test before broadcasting it to clients.
